We’re starting a school!
During the past 2 years Mosaic has invested heavily in the education of our children. We realise that it is not enough to ensure that our children have proper housing and that their parents are employed. We realise that in order to create any kind of future for our children, education needs to be a major priority!
Currently, our country does not make education a priority. We’ve shared with you in previous stories some of the realities of the South African education system, and we’ve seen it first-hand. When asking one of our children why she only gets 18% for her mathematics on her school report, her answer was simple: How is she supposed to understand maths if her teacher is almost never in class, and when she is, she doesn’t understand the work either!
Sad realities like these inspired us more than 2 years ago to start an after-school tutoring program, with classes in Maths, English and Computer literacy. After about a year of our new program, we wanted to add science, geography and economics tutoring as well. Reality hit us hard. If we want to provide tutoring for this many subjects, we might as well open our own school!
Since education is not our core business, we prayed for partners who feel the burden to partake in this journey of ours to open a proper private school in our community. It is with immense excitement that we can now announce that we will be opening a private school in our community for Grade 1 – 7 learners, in partnership with 3 other local organisations! Land has been identified, contracted and the fence is busy going up as you are reading this.
Before the end of the year, we will complete the first phase of development, including sports fields and some classrooms. We are thrilled to be able to share that 50% of the funding for this phase has already been raised!
