Nelson Mandela Day

On the 18th of July, South Africans all across the country as well as the international community celebrated former president Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday.  Tata Madiba, as most South Africans refer to him,  is an international icon of freedom, peace, forgiveness and reconciliation. He has played a tremendous part in the healing of a once broken nation and the birth of a rainbow nation.

Madiba dedicated 67 years of his life in fighting for the human rights of all South Africans. In honour of his journey, Nelson Mandela Day was created where all South Africans as well as the International community are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to do goodwill.

This year, University students from Patria men’s hostel in Potchefstroom, dedicated their time to help build house 17 and will be doing so until the 26th of July.

Our children also did their part by cleaning up the neighbourhood. After the clean-up session, the children released balloons as a symbol of South Africans long walk to freedom.
